Editorial - New Book Published

Dr. Guvendiren edited a book titled "3D Bioprinting in Medicine - Technologies, Bioinks and Applications". This book provides current and emerging developments in bioprinting with respect to bioprinting technologies, bioinks, applications, and regulatory pathways. Topics covered include 3D bioprinting technologies, materials such as bioinks and bioink design, applications of bioprinting complex tissues, tissue and disease models, vasculature, and musculoskeletal tissue. The final chapter is devoted to clinical applications of bioprinting, including the safety, ethical, and regulatory aspects. This book serves as a go-to reference on bioprinting and is ideal for students, researchers and professionals, including those in academia, government, the medical industry, and healthcare.

Invited Seminar

Dr. Guvendiren delivered an invited seminar on "Interlayer adhesion in additively manufactured high performance plastics" during Mid Atlantic Rubber & Plastics Group Fall Technical Meeting focused on Elastomers & Plastics Enabling 3D Printing, hosted by American Additive Manufacturing in Horsham, PA.

NJIT High School Summer Research Internship Poster Symposium and Closing Event !!!

Erica Gjini (Ramsey High School), Ethan Park (Tenafly High School), and Arjavi Vyas (JFK Memorial High School) successfully presented their summer research projects. Ira Hysi (Stoneleigh-Burnham School, MA) and Victoria Youssef (Livingston High School) also participated in Summer Research in this summer. We congratulate Erica, Ethan, Arjavi, Ira and Victoria as well as their mentors.

NJIT International Undergraduate Summer Research Symposium !!!

David Bushiri (ME, NJIT)), Ediha Choudhury (BME, NJIT), Iren Atalla (BME, NJIT) and Mahima Choudhury (Biotechnology, Heritage Program, India) successfully presented their work during the 12th International Undergraduate Summer Research Symposium at NJIT. We congratulate David, Ediha, Iren and Mahima as well as their mentors Dr. Chya-Yan, Shen Ji, and Andrew House. We are also grateful for the McNair Program (David, Ediha and Iren).

MTF Junior Investigator AWARD

Dr. Guvendiren received Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation Biologics Junior Investigator Award. The project “Bioprinting Scaffolds from Novel Allograft-Derived Bioinks to Advance Reconstruction of Osteochondral Interface” will begin in August 2019.

CHE415 - Introduction to 3D Printing

In this semester, CHE415 took place in newly established CME 3D Printing Laboratory. We had a great group of undergraduate students with diverse backgrounds from engineering to computer science. The picture (below) is taken after the final design project presentations. Students presented their innovative designs !!!

Dr. Guvendiren gave an invited seminar at Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Medicine. His talk was titled " 3D bioprinting to fabricate vascularized tissue models".

NEWS COVERAGE!

Our lab is highlighted by Voice of America (VOA) news agency. The interview also highlighted our recent work on "Bioprinting tumors for drug screening. VOA is a federally funded international multimedia agency with content in more than 40 languages. Dr. Guvendiren's interview was in Turkish. Renewal of SEED GRANT from CEMB!

Our Seed Grant from The Center for Engineering MechanoBiology (CEMB), a multi-institutional Science and Technology Center funded by the National Science Foundation, is renewed. We are looking forward to continuing our fruitful collaborations with the CEMB affiliated faculty members.

NEW GRANT from New Jersey Health Foundation!

We received a new research grant from the New Jersey Health Foundation (NJHF) to support our efforts to 3D bioprint vascular tumor models for drug screening. NJHF is a not-for-profit organization supporting exciting health-related research and education programs in New Jersey.

NEBEC Podium Presentations !!!

Our group gave two podium presentations in the 45th Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference, being held in New Brunswick (NJ) at Rutgers University's Livingston Campus Student Center. "Dynamic Hydrogel Platforms for in vitro Cardiac Models" presented by Dr. Guvendiren.  "3D Bioprinting of Complex Channels within Cell-Laden Hydrogels" presented by Shen Ji.

Dr. Guvendiren gave an invited seminar at NJ Symposium on Biomaterials Science - Emerging Challenges in Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine for the Next 15 Years: Discovery – Innovation – Translation. His talk was titled "Bioprinting Call-laden Hydrogels with Built-in Vasculature".

New Publication !!!

Our research paper titled "Polyester-based Ink Platform with Tunable Bioactivity for 3D Printing of Tissue Engineering Scaffolds" is published in Biomaterials Science - 2019 Emerging Investigators Special Issue. This work is a collaboration between NJIT and Rutgers. Our paper is also highlighted as a back cover of the journal for the corresponding issue.

Plenary Talk / MRS Fall Meeting

Guvendiren lab attended the 2019 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston. Dr. Chya-Yan Liaw delivered a plenary talk (on behalf of Dr. Guvendiren) and a poster presentation. Her poster was titled "Investigating Interlayer Bonding Strength of FDM 3D-Printed PEEK through Design of Experiment (DOE) and Three-Point Flexural Test". The plenary talk was on "3D Bioprinting Vascularized Hydrogel Constructs for Cancer Models".

Session Organizer / AIChE 2019 Annual Meeting

Dr. Guvendiren organized and chaired a session on "Bioprinting of Scaffolds, Tissues, and Organs" in the AIChE 2019 Annual Meeting, held in Orlando, FL. Guvendiren lab members also delivered a podium presentation (by Dr. Guvendiren) and a poster presentation (by Andrew House) during the conference.

Dr. Guvendiren delivered a plenary talk titled "Bioprinting of Complex 3D Vascular Networks within Cell-Laden Hydrogels" during the International Conference on Biofabrication, held at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

BMES Annual Meeting, Philadelphia (PA)

Guvendiren lab was at the 2019 BMES Annual Meeting. Our team will have 3 posters (Shen Ji, Iren Atalla (Undergrad), and Dr. Chya-Yan Liaw) and a podium presentation (Andrew House). Dr. Guvendiren chaired a session on Advanced 3D Printing.
